T-183C large-size vertical internal grinding machine developed by Toyo
-Supports high-precision machining of work with an inner
diameter of up to 700 mm, the largest specification available from Toyo
-

Toyo Advanced Technologies Co., Ltd., (Head Office:
Minami-ku, Hiroshima; President: Kenichi Yamamoto) today announced the release
of the newly developed T-183C, a large-scale vertical internal grinding
machine capable of machining work with an inner diameter of up to 700 mm.
From last year, Toyo has steadily been introducing new models in its series
of vertical internal grinding machines, with the T-181C (chuck type) compact
model and T-182S (centerless type) midsize model already on the market.
The T-183C is the third product to appear in the series and the largest
model yet. This large-scale chuck type internal grinding machine is capable
of handling even larger work pieces than Toyo's large-size horizontal internal
grinding machine, which has a maximum work inner diameter of 610 mm.
The T-183C employs a Z-axis (table axis) with hydrostatic six-face restraint
guides, a hydrostatic screw, and hydrostatic bearings. The Z-axis and X-axis
(cross-slide axis) use linear scales permitting 0.1µm feedback control.
This, combined with the high-precision bearings used for the workspindle,
enables machining of extremely high accuracy. The workspindle is powered
by a 7.5 kW AC servomotor. Two types of high-frequency wheelhead are available
as options for enhanced efficiency: one with a grinding spindle of 15,000
rpm and output 14.6 kW and the other with a rotation rate of 10,000 rpm
and output of 23 kW.
In addition to internal grinding, the T-183C can also machine the outer
diameter and end faces of work pieces. It can handle work with a maximum
inner diameter of 700 mm, maximum outer diameter of 750 mm, and maximum
width of 500 mm. The T-183C is suitable for high-precision machining of
large parts such as spindle housings for machine tools, cylinders for construction
equipment, and large bearings for railroads. The optional automatic tool
changer (ATC) makes it possible to grind various surfaces with a single
chucking operation. There is also an automatic pallet changer (APC) available
for unmanned operation.
Toyo Advanced Technologies was the first Japanese machine tool manufacturer
to produce a cumulative total of 10,000 internal grinding machines and is
considered a leader in the field. In addition to its well-established horizontal
models, Toyo is also concentrating on the development of vertical internal
grinding machines. Toyo will be continuing to develop even larger-scale
vertical internal grinding machines while introducing new models based on
its existing products. As a leading manufacturer in the field, Toyo plans
to broaden its line of internal grinding machine models in the years ahead.

Main
Features of T-183C
1. Basic Specifications
| ・ Floor space: (W × L× H) |
2,900 mm × 3,100 mm × 3,900 mm |
| ・ Max. chuckable work dimensions |
750 mm (outer diameter), 500 mm (width) |
| ・ Max. grindable work inner diameter |
700 mm |
| ・ Table travel |
630 mm |
2. High-Precision Machining
- The T-183C incorporates measures such as a column cooling system to
suppress heat deformation, a weak point of conventional vertical grinding
machines. In addition, the Z-axis (table axis) employs hydrostatic six-face
restraint guides, a hydrostatic screw, and hydrostatic bearings. Low
contact friction and high attenuation of vibration provide highly precise
feed, realizing a straightness of 0.5µm/600 mm or better.
- The Z-axis and X-axis are equipped with linear scales. Feedback control
enables positioning accuracy of 0.1µm for machining of extremely high
accuracy.
- The workspindle is supported by high-precision bearings and powered
by a high-output 7.5 kW AC servomotor. This allows for precise grinding
of heavy parts. (Machining results using model piece: roundness 0.3µ
m, surface roughness 0.1 µm Ra.)
3. High Machining Efficiency
- The grinding spindle is a key element in achieving machining efficiency.
Toyo offers as options two types of high-frequency wheelhead that were
developed by Toyo and provide high output and rigidity. The HFB015-146
has a rotation rate of 15,000 rpm and output 14.6 kW, and the HFB01-230
has a rotation rate of 10,000 rpm and output of 23 kW. Combined with
the high-rigidity of the T-183C itself, these wheelheads deliver consistently
high precision and excellent machining efficiency.
- The T-183C is equipped with TOYOMATIC-4000, a high-performance, conversational
CNC system available only from Toyo. It supports various operations,
including automated grinding and continuous multi-face grinding.
4. Process Integration
- A number of machining programs are available, including internal,
external, end face, and back end face grinding. This allows multiple
grinding operations to be performed on the work piece in a single chucking.
Multiple operations can be performed on a single work piece as part
of one process, rather than several.
- The optional automatic tool changer (ATC) makes it possible to grind
multiple surfaces of a work piece, using grinding wheels optimized for
each face.
5. Automation
- A touch probe is available as an option, making it possible to achieve
consistently excellent dimensional precision in unmanned operation.
It allows highly accurate automatic measurement of the finish stock
removal required following rough machining. This enables automated operation
while maintaining consistently high dimensional accuracy. The touch
probe can also be used for checking the work piece configuration in
order to protect the grinding wheel against mechanical impacts and damages.
- An automatic pallet changer (APC) is available as an option. It allows
work to be prepared outside of the machine, thereby boosting the operation
rate of the equipment. When combined with the ATC and/or touch probe,
unmanned automated grinding is possible.
